Before I begin, let’s remind us of what wellness is and how it is connected to living a healthy life. Wellness is the holistic approach that makes us aware of our existence, helps us strike balance between our body, mind, and soul. It is the various choices that we make to live a fulfilling and healthy life. It is greatly connected to our health, as it lays down the path of various lifestyle patterns that will continue to benefit us until our last breath.
Over the past few months, a lot of things has changed due to the pandemic and the need for paying attention to the overall health has become even more vital. Well, the best way to stay safe and healthy is by taking proper care of ourselves, following safety guidelines and maintaining a lifestyle that helps in these tough times.
Like they say, ‘health is wealth’, indeed it is, and we must keep it as our utmost priority. Will you feel happy enjoying your first date if your mind is stressed? Would you enjoy your vacation if you are not happy from within? The answer is NO. Exactly and that is why we need to pay attention to our overall well-being. Wellness is multidimensional and an ever-going process. It focuses on self-discovery, health, nutrition, relaxation and much more.
If we are free of diseases medically, that is not healthy. If we feel like a complete human being in our body, mind and spirit, that is when we are really healthy. – Sadhguru
I feel so fortunate to be born on the land which is known for its traditional healthcare practices and holistic wellness. India is the birthplace of Yoga and Ayurveda, and which has gained popularity and appreciation all over the globe. Various wellness programs are held all over the world that focus on the mental, social, spiritual, physical, financial wellbeing. Look around, make the best use of resources available and follow the conscious path for a healthy lifestyle. Let us take out some time and do the best to ourselves because nobody else can do it on our behalf.
Here is a list of wellness tips that we can/must consider to enrich our lives:
Making the most of the mornings
We all have heard the endless benefits of waking up early and starting the day. Right from increased productivity and greater creativity, morning has its magic. If I to pick a routine, then it would be starting early. I do not wake up exceedingly early but yes 7 am is my time. I still find peace, power, and positivity around that hour.
Check out a few simple and healthy habits to start your day:
- Start with morning prayer
- Drink warm lemon water
- 5min morning meditation
- Water your plants (as per when required)
- Give a good stretch to your muscles
- Do some exercises
- Take a morning walk or run
- Read something positive
- Drink Coffee
- Practise Gratitude
- Eat healthy breakfast
- Take cold shower
- Make a task list for the day
Start your day with a routine that makes you feel happy, positive, energized and helps you set the tone for the rest of the day.
Healthy living depends a lot on healthy eating. It is the most important choice we can make, which will not only help us fight with various diseases but also helps maintain body weight and adds years to our lives. Add more of fresh fruits, green vegetables and drink enough water the whole day for the long-term wellbeing.
“It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.” – Mahatma Gandhi
Taking Enough Sleep
Sleeping is as important as eating healthy. It gives the much-needed rest our body needs to run efficiently. It is not just the number of hours, but the quality of sleep is what is important. Minimum 7-8 hours of sleep is what we need as an adult to recharge our bodies and keep it in good shape. Taking enough sleep can make a lot of difference to your health and enhances the quality of your life.
Irrespective of your work schedules and locations, there are ways you can keep your body moving throughout the day.
Let’s look at some easy ways to keep our body moving:
- Use stairs instead of lift and escalator
- Walk or cycle instead of driving to nearby places
- Use your breaks to walk and talk
- Do some simple body movement exercise like sit-ups, jog, hand circles, etc in your free time
- Go for swimming, badminton etc on weekends
- Involve in all the fun physical activities
Besides boosting energy levels, it keeps you fit and healthy.
Wellness is all about self-discovery and self-love. Give yourself enough rest and do take out time for yourself occasionally. Right from self-grooming, to giving yourself a dessert treat, planning a vacation, to spending a day with a friend just relaxing and chilling, watching a movie, journaling, meditating, or doing nothing at all. We all need to relax after a busy day or week, and therefore, the more we keep ourselves happy, the more we will be able to deliver the best performance in every facet of our lives.
Everything starts with YOU.
The beauty lies in acknowledging the source that makes you happy. Gratitude is being thankful for the factors that have added value to your existence. It’s a beautiful way to send positive vibrations to the outside world and receive abundance in life. Practise it daily and you are sure to make a difference in your life.
Acknowledge and Appreciate
Sticking to healthy habits
It is not always the big changes that lead to a greater outcome but mostly the small changes that hold the power to change your life. We all know what is good and bad for us, but mostly we ignore it for momentary pleasures, but that is not wise. It may take a while to change lifestyle patterns that aren’t doing good to you, but it’s going to be worth it in the end.
Some healthy habits:
- Drink plenty of water
- Practise healthy eating
- Be Mindful
- Quit Smoking
- Accept challenges
- Be a good listener
- Be positive
Yoga and meditation are other ways to release stress and anxiety. The list will go on and on but let us pause and start from somewhere and practise it daily.
Do what you love
Doing what you love not only in regards to career choices but also in your everyday life. It’s about understanding and giving priority to things that you enjoy doing. Set and create your routines as pe your lifestyle, keeping in mind your comfort and preferences. This way, you would not skip routines, rather would look forward to living your life to the fullest.
Spend quality time with your loved ones
According to many pieces of research, it has been found that spending quality time with friends and family helps relieve stress and may lengthen your life. We humans cannot stay alone forever, we are made that way. It’s important to have a social life which adds worth to your ecosystem. Lockdown gives you the perfect opportunity to manage and spend quality time with your loved ones. Make the most of it.
Surround yourself with people who help you grow, appreciates your efforts, and loves you. Powerful relationships make you strong, confident and help cope up easily in challenging situations.
I’ve worked all my life on the subject of awareness, whether it’s awareness of the body, awareness of the mind, awareness of your emotions, awareness of your relationships, or awareness of your environment. I think the key to transforming your life is to be aware of who you are.
– Dr. Deepak Chopra
Nothing changes overnight but with constant practise and willingness, you’ll be on your way to live a happier, healthier and energetic life.
